TORSO OF NOTEBOOK.
Binding:
Wooden boards covered with leather, four bands, blind stamping, brass bosses, metal clasps, preserved lower lining, rest of upper lining, original endpapers, remnants of original sewing and paper.
Approximate size: 240 x 210 x 35 mm. All parts are original, without modifications or restoration.
Book block: 18 sheets. Paper age is determined to be 16th century or older. Visible part of filigree on all sheets. Eagle head,
wing, claw and initial M. Bookbinding corresponds to sixteenth century.
Reflection about purpose: Was it a printed book with a convolut of a few blank pages or a notebook? The approximate width of the spine is measured as the outer dimension of the object. The thickness of a single board is 8 to 9 mm. Subtracting the two boards leaves 17 to 19 mm for the missing book block. The preserved 18 sheets form a thickness of 5mm. Thus, the original book block had about 80 sheets. Binding such a thin book block in solid boards with brass bosses and metal clips makes no sense. On the other hand, if it was a notebook that was frequently handled, it would be logical.
