Josef Sup (August 24, 1910, Uhelna Pribram near Chotebor, Austria-Hungary - July 16, 1980, Praha, Czechoslovakia)
Czech diplomat, professor, editor and translator from French.
He studied Romanism and Comparative Literature at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, where he also received the title of PhDr. In 1938-1945 he worked as an editor in the publishing house Vilímek and in the European Literary Club. At that time he also made numerous personal contacts with the Czech literary and visual avant-garde (K. Biebl, J. Seifert, F. Halas, V. Vancura, V. Lacina, J. Tichý).
After the end of the Second World War he joined the diplomatic service. Between 1946-1948 he was a cultural attaché in Geneva, during the years 1948-1952 a press attache in Paris. In 1948-1950 he worked as a laborer in Kladno Poldi. In 1955 he returned to editorial work and began working at the State Publishing House of Political Literature, later he became director of the Prague Language School and professor at the University on 17 November.
His rich lecturing activities for leading Czech publishers (Odeon, Ceskoslovensky spisovatel) focused on French literature as well as his translation work. He is also the author of numerous afterword to translations of French fiction.
